Tsukiji Fish Market
The original Tsukiji Fish Market originally opened in the 1930’s and at one time it was considered the was the largest wholesale fish, seafood and food market in the world. In October 2018, the “fish market” (inner wholesale market) part of this facility closed and relocated 1.5 miles away to the new Toyosu Fish Market. The outer retail market of restaurants, vendors and associated restaurant supply stores stayed behind and remained operational.
We tried a few things and found everything to be quite good (grilled seafood, etc). One of the more popular spots was Tsukiji Yamachō who is famous for their egg tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelette). When done cooking, they cut the eggs and serve them on a bamboo stick (like a popsicle). Very tasty! (just a little too sweet for us). You can also watch how they make them which is quite complex – thin sheets of perfectly grilled egg, that are carefully layered into a log shape. Each sell for only 100 yen (0.91 cents).
