Train to Kanchanaburi – Bangkok’s Thonburi Station

Bangkok’s Thonburi Train Station

We always look forward to our train ride to Kanchanaburi.  To some this train is a way for locals to travel to and from their work, others it maybe a visit into the big city to purchase goods and to the rest of us (tourists) a way to travel to and from Kanchanaburi.  The train is a considered “3rd Class” (open window – no A/C) but its not as bad as it sounds – inside is clean and seats are fairly comfortable.  Its hard to explain, but there is something about riding along listening to the klickety klack that is actually quite relaxing.

Inside Train – Snacks Can Be Purchased

We departed around 7:50 in the morning.  The weather was perfect, not too hot (yet).  It takes a little over two and a half hours to get to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok.  There are people who travel on this train for the purpose of selling food and snacks (walking up and down each car).  The last car (end car) is reserved for Monks and vendors storing their food goods.

I didn’t really get a chance to take any pictures plus I try to be respectful of people on the train.  After all this is their daily life – I would not want people taking pictures on me in the same manner.

Due to Bangkok’s overwhelming (and increasing) traffic, this train offers the best way (from Kanchanaburi) to get into the city.  Sure there are other more comfortable ways of getting into Bangkok (buses, private car/vans, etc) but all of them will get stuck in traffic.  This train is able to go right into the city center train station without any delays.
