Our 3 Year Plan to Retire Early and Move to Thailand
We spent most of 2016 through summer 2017 getting rid of all our possessions. We went ahead moved into a small apartment in July, 2017. This made it easy to spend the summer of 2017 getting our house ready to sell. We were able to get it put on the market right before our December 2017 trip to Thailand. We actually got an offer while we were in Thailand and eventually closed in February 2018.
It's been a long and hard couple years getting ready but it's been worth it. It now feels good having all of that behind us. Adjusting to apartment life has gone very well. This type of living arrangement will be very similar to our future life in Thailand. When the time comes to leave we only plan to take two small check-in bags and two backpacks. We are trading our things for experiences.
We do not plan to buy or own any property in Thailand. This will allow us to take advantage of the low cost rental apartments and condos. We'll probably start out living in Bangkok for the first year or so - it has so much to see and do on its own. After this we'll play it by ear and see how it goes. At some point we'll probably be moving around a lot between different destinations - trying not to stay in the same place for more than 6 months or so. Doing this will give us the opportunity to stay in other parts of the country. We also plan to take numerous trips around Southeast Asia (such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.). At some point down the road (few years) we also plan to visit Portugal (low cost of living) which we plan to use like a home-base while we travel in and around Europe.
But Why Retire Early?...
"Time" is one of the most precious things that we have in life. Yet we don't know how much of it we have do we? That's why whatever one dreams of doing in their life needs to do it (or start the process) as soon as they can because we do not know what tomorrow brings. For us we want to maximize our retirement time while we are still young
