Nyaung U – Shwezigon Pagoda

Up next is a visit to the beautiful golden Shwezigon Pagoda in Nyuang U.  This pagoda also falls under “one of the most significant religious structures” in Myanmar.  Construction began in the 11th century by King Anawrahta (and finished under his son King Kyansittha), this pagoda with its circular gold leaf covered stupa became the architectural prototype for many other stupas across Myanmar.

Under King Kyansittha (one of the greatest builders in Myanmar) Bagan would become known as the “city of four million pagodas”.  Though over the years many of the pagodas were damaged or destroyed (wars, earthquakes, etc.) as many as 3000+ still stand today.
