Limón, Costa Rica

Puerto Limón, commonly known as Limón, is the capital city and main hub of Limón province, as well as of the cantón of Limón in Costa Rica. It is the second largest city in Costa Rica, with a population of over 55,000, and is home of the Afro-Costa Rican community.

Due to limited time at this destination we decided to take a bus tour of the city.  In the end we did not get to see too much but our tour guide Aileen (and driver Alex) was one of the best we’ve ever had.

Something we did not know – Costa Rica is the world leader in snake antivenom.  They are also one of the top producers of bananas.  They stopped at one of the banana fields and picked a banana flower which when pealing each layer back you can see tiny little “baby” bananas they will eventually grow into larger bananas.

We also passed by large banana processing facilities that ship out across the world.

We also stopped by a food stand that had local fruit and food.  All very tasty!

Costa Rica is also known for its earthquakes.  One of the worse in their history hit Limón in April 1991.  This earthquake’s 6.1 feet uplift forever changed the beaches here by replacing them with coral and sand bluffs.
