First Year in Thailand – Cost of Living Comparison (USA vs Thailand)

Our 1st Year in Thailand
Cost of Living Comparison
(USA vs Bangkok, Thailand)

Since we just finished up our first year of living in Thailand, I wanted put together a cost of living comparison between back home in US versus Bangkok, Thailand. The easiest way to do this is with a chart (shown below). To keep it simple and to maintain an “apple to apples” comparison, I have chosen the following 5 basic expenses:

  • Condo Rent
  • Electricity
  • Water
  • Internet
  • Cell Phone

The first sections shows cost per month and year between USA and Thailand (12 month average). The second section shows the cost savings (per month and year) of living in Thailand (versus living in USA).  The total savings per year is shown in the lower right corner.

Our average cost per month living in Thailand was only $496.20 versus $1,393.60 living in USA (a monthly savings of $897.40!).   For our first year of living in Thailand, our total cost was only $5,954.40 versus a whopping $16,723.20 living in the US (a yearly savings of $10,768.80!).

So, was it worth it for us to move to Thailand?

…we think the numbers speak for themselves! 😊

    • Understood 🙂… we miss you (and everyone back home) as well. Glad to hear you are doing well and thanks for keeping up with us! Currently we are just waiting things out – hopefully 2021 will be a better year ahead! Be on the lookout for a new website redesign and more posts from our trip in China (from this past January 2020).

Take care, be safe and stay healthy.

  • Hi Dean,
Glad to hear all is well. Yes, the damper has been put on everyone’s travel. My wife and I have canceled 2 cruises, one reunion and a slew of short trips that we would have taken. Stay well and healthy and hopefully, you all will be able to begin the adventure of exploring again! Sounds really great, but we’re sticking around to watch our grandson grow up!

    Cheers and take care,
    Ron

    • Good to hear from you Ron! Like a lot of people, we had to cancel all of our travel plans this year due to COVID-19. For now we are just waiting things out – hopefully 2021 will be a better year. Glad to hear you and your family are doing well. Thanks for keeping us with us – be on the lookout for a new website redesign and more posts from our trip in China (from this past January 2020).

You all take care, be safe and stay healthy.

  • I am jealous 🙂 I hope you are doing well and staying healthy.
How are you guys dealing with pandemic?
    Are guys getting home sick?

    • Hello Imad – it’s really good to hear from you! Thanks for checking in on us. We hope all is well with you and your family.

We are healthy, doing well, and enjoying retirement life in Bangkok. After moving to Thailand, we hit the ground running with trips to Bhutan, Japan, China, and various trips around Thailand. We were just getting ready to plan some big trips for 2020 when COVID-19 hit. Lucky for us we had not locked anything in yet. Since February we have been laying low most of the time – getting out occasionally to get some exercise, fresh air and grab a few groceries. Due to not allowing any foreign passengers into the country, Thailand has done a pretty good job of containing COVID-19 but this has unfortunately devastated their economy (due to reliance on international tourists).

Yes, we do miss all of our friends and family but we try to keep up with everybody through video chatting and calls. Hopefully with the help of vaccines, 2021 will be a better year ahead!

Take care, be safe and stay healthy.

  • Doesn’t seem like it could have been a year already. With all that money you’ve saved you can help me with that gold plated lumber I’ve been buying. How are the road trips going?

    • Always good to hear from you, Steve! Hope all is well on your end (you, Missy and Ethan, and your new home construction project). So true about our first year going by fast – it really flew by!

Gold plated lumber… I’ve heard of gold plated toilets, faucets, and fixtures but now lumber?!? You are quite the trendsetter down in South Cackalacky! :^) But all joking aside, sorry to hear about the higher lumber prices. Hopefully, they can finish things up before it gets too out of hand.

Road trips – we’ve been researching cars but not quite ready yet to purchase (maybe early 2021). Soon, we’ll probably start off with a few short trips (Hua Hin, Pattaya) with a rental car to ease into Thailand’s adventurous driving environment (driving on the opposite side, different rules, and driving logic).

Another concern we have with traveling is a lot of the popular tourist areas have been devastated due to the COVID-19 lockdown where no international tourists have been allowed to enter. Once you get to a destination there may only be a handful of hotels, restaurants, or businesses open. The rest of the town(s) will likely be closed and boarded up. Most businesses will be operating with reduced staff and most restaurants will offer limited menus/choices. They are doing the best they can under the circumstances but it is not pretty! Recent vaccine news seems very promising so hopefully, things will start turning around for the better by spring/summer of 2021!

We’ve been enjoying the “Missy & Steve’s House-Building Adventures” blog – very detailed and informative. Good job Missy, for putting it all together!

Stay in touch – take care, be safe, and stay healthy!

  • Great to hear you all are doing OK. Good luck on that vehicle situation. Hopefully, there will be a viable vaccine so all of us can get back to a somewhat normal life! Take care and be safe.

    • Thanks Ron! It’s always good to hear from you. Hope you and the family are doing well. Totally agree with you – let’s all hope the new vaccines can help turn things around so we can put this COVID-19 thing behind us! Wish you all a happy thanksgiving – take care, be safe, and stay healthy!
